Adult Education Program: Beverages & Bookmarks – Recap

On January 30, 2021, Etz Hayim congregants joined together for Havdalah and for a “Beverages and Bookmarks” event. After Rav Natan led us in the service to usher out Shabbat we spent time learning about watercolors and creating our own beautiful bookmarks. Our instructor was Sara Shoob, a docent at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Sara showed us several examples of watercolors and told us that they are rarely exhibited at the museum because the colors and paper are so fragile. She explained how to use and mix the colors and talked us through the color wheel, which helps artists find complementary colors.

After her explanation, Sara helped us create three artworks which could be cut into bookmarks, or kept whole and used as an art piece or a greeting card. We painted flowers, trees, and an abstract color composition. Many participants were inspired to paint different scenes and shapes. Sara reminded us to play with our paints and enjoy the process. At the end of the evening everyone had a new appreciation for watercolors and some beautiful pieces of art.
